Pests can make it difficult to enjoy your hard-earned RV camping trip. Droppings, chewed wires, and nests are just a few of the ways that pests can harm your RV. This guide from Pink Flamingo RV will outline a few basic strategies on how to deal with pest infestations in your RV.

Pest Prevention

A good way to keep pests out of your RV in the first place is by keeping everything as clean as possible. Food crumbs and spills left alone for too long can create a smell. These smells tell pests that your RV is a place where food can be found, even if the smells themselves are too small for humans to detect. You should also keep any dry food you have in airtight containers for much the same reasons.

Rodents

Rodents, such as rats and mice, are surprisingly adept at squeezing through tiny holes. That’s why you should occasionally inspect your camper’s exterior and plug up any openings that you discover. If the rodents are already inside your RV, traps and/or poison are your best bet for dealing with them.

Insects

There are many different kinds of insects that can invade your RV, and all of them require a slightly different approach. Roaches, for instance, can be killed using insecticides/bait. However, these kinds of chemicals are just as dangerous to people and pets as they are to insects, so they need to be used carefully. Ants can be tricky to deal with since they prefer to make colonies. Instead of squashing every ant that you see, try following one back to its colony and dealing with them from there. You can also spray the surfaces that the ants tend to frequent with soapy water and wipe them down to eliminate the chemical “trails” that these insects use to navigate. Bees and wasps are difficult to deal with due to their stingers. Be very careful when dealing with these insects, especially if they’ve formed a hive in your RV. Don’t be afraid to call in a professional exterminator should the need arise.
