It’s best if you’re able to tow your travel trailer to your camping destination while it’s sunny outside, but you won’t always get perfect weather. Sometimes, you’re just going to have to drive and tow in the rain. You can do it, though, if you’re smart about it. Here are some tips on how to safely tow your trailer in rainy weather.

Examine Your Setup

Before you get into the car, you should walk around your towing setup to make sure that your hitch and towing chains are secured. You’ll also want to look over your trailer to ensure that windows and doors are shut and slide-outs are fully pushed in. Check the tire pressure on all of your tires on both the trailer and your towing vehicle and air them up if needed so that you can get the best traction possible on wet roads.

Slow Down & Be Vigilant

As you drive, try to stay at least five to ten miles below the posted speed limit when the roads are wet. You’ll still need to create a space cushion around you so that you have plenty of time to bring your full towing setup to a complete stop safely, too. Avoid changing lanes and watch the road ahead so that you can react to any accidents or congestion.
